What has happend this week?

Zanna and Kiwi are totally back to “normal” and today Valgie finally showed the boys she isn’t interested in them anymore.
Mind you the boys still found Vaglie very attractive so to be kind to male dog owners Ill keep her close to me for another few days.

The problem for the girls in season is where to walk. They still want to run freely and release their energy. I find places that are not so busy and often we don’t meet anyone at all. But sometimes we of course do and then I call the girl in question to me and they walk next to me a good distance from the oncomers. Kiwi, not being an obedient Lagotto but a inquisitive Estrela, I put on a leash. I think these are sensible things to do when you’re an owner of a female.

Now what really bothers me is when other dog owners don’t take there responsibility for their dogs whether they are males or females.
Last week Kiwi was still “interesting” so like I said I put her on a leash and walked a long way from the path so as to keep a distance from the oncoming couple with their dog.
If I was them and I saw someone acting so stupid (cos I think people with their dogs on a leash in the forest kind of weird) I would think 1) “this dog could be viscous so this person is keeping the dog from my dog to avoid a fight”, or 2) “this dog is a female in season”, or 3) “this is a silly person not letting her dog have fun running free but that’s not my business”. What ever the reason I would take my responsibility and keep my dog away from the dog on the leash because this owner has his/her reasons to keep their dog away from mine.
Well you guessed it, the man let his male do what he wanted and so this male feel madly in love with Kiwi and I had to keep him away from Kiwi’s behind by putting my foot between then. Then this owner yelled to stop kicking his dog so I explained I hadn’t (yet) touched his (pain in the butt) dog but that he should keep his dog away since Kiwi was in season.
To my huge amazement he started to really enjoy the situation and argued that this was nature’s natural way and seemed even prepared to let his dog have his fun. OMG I was so pissed-off and told him that if he didn’t take his responsibility right there and then he would get all the pups! Hmmm this idea suddenly didn’t seem so much fun and he finally got hold of his dog and walked on.

My point is to be a responsible dog owner. We all have to live in this relatively small but very “dog tolerant” country. Seeing situations and acting courteously makes life so much nicer.

The 3 "seasonal girls"

Its been a very girly time here the last month or so.

First Zanna came into season, 10 days later Kiwi did too and another 10 days later Vaglie decide that she couldn’t stay behind and came into season nearly 2 months earlier than expected. I wonder if next season they will all come into season at the same time.

It would have advantages and disadvantages if they did this…..

If they all came into season at the same time then the times I have to “watch out” for them is less times a year….
But keeping an eye out for 3 girls at once… wow that could be difficult.

As it was now it wasn’t too bad, and when Zanna is finally not in the mood for a lover she is actually great at keeping the boys away from the girls that are in season.

When Flecha (who was castrated) was still alive he was a wonderful guard dog when it came to keeping the male dogs away from his girls. Usually all he had to do was give them “the eye” and they would leave within seconds. And sometimes it required Flecha to move 2 steps in their direction and they would be off. And even less times he had to chase them, some times giving them a boxing. At lest that’s what it looked like as it wasn’t a fighting match, and they boys would be off within seconds and Flecha would walk back to me with I swear a smile on his face! He walked so proud tail wagging with joy. Gosh I still miss him so much.

The weirdest thing happened after Flecha died. Zanna seemed to “step into his shoes” and even though she is not the leader of the pack and has the softest little character, she took over his “female guarding duties” and is the one to ward off the boys when the other girls are in season. She doesn’t do her job the same way as Flecha did. Her tactics are to snap a barking message to the boys when they get too near. I think if you translated it to English it would mean “LEAVE US ALONE ANDGO AWAY!!!”. Zanna is kind of like a big mouthed pacifist. And the boys don’t mess with her believe me!!! It always makes me laugh to see her do her “big green hulk” demonstration and she walks just as proud as Flecha did.

Just a few more days and Vaglie will be back to “normal” too and we can walk freely again between any dogs that approach us!!!! YIPPIE!!!!!!!
